Picking the right intranet “in a box” software isn’t always straightforward with so much choice in the market. It can be hard to know where to start.
Most teams we work with have already made up their mind whether to go for a standalone intranet solution or to go for intranet software that is built within SharePoint and extends SharePoint’s capabilities. But even then, there is still a lot of choice.
Powell Intranet and Lightspeed365 are both SharePoint intranet solutions. Powell is recognised as a global player in the market, while Content Formula, the agency behind Lightspeed365, has a strong track record in the intranet space across over two decades.
Powell and Lightspeed365 have some elements in common including the ability to add value to your investment in Microsoft 365, but they are also distinct offerings, offering real choice and contrast. If you’re already considering Powell Intranet, this page provides a comparison with Lightspeed365, helping you to decide which might be the better fit for your organisation.

What is Powell Intranet?
Powell Intranet is a leading “in-a-box” intranet product built on SharePoint that brings additional functionality including governance, branding, multi-lingual support and engagement features to support the launch of a sophisticated SharePoint intranet. Produced by Paris-based Powell Software, the product is long established in the market.
Powell Intranet integrates closely with Microsoft 365, although has a number of connectors to non-365 applications. Powell is designed to be flexible so it can be used by both large and complex organisations with multiple locations and brands, as well as smaller and medium-sized businesses. It comes with a native mobile app, as well as an increasing number of AI-powered features.
Powell Intranet is also frequently launched with a sister product that supports governance across Microsoft 365 and Team, covering areas such as naming conventions, sensitivity labels and content governance.
What Powell and Lightspeed365 have in common
Both Powell Intranet and Lightspeed365 are intranet in-a-box solutions that are designed to provide everything you need to launch a leading intranet supporting internal communications, employee engagement and task completion. This means there are some overlapping features including additional news layouts, more flexible branding and support for governance.
Both products are built on SharePoint Online which means all data stays within the Microsoft 365 tenant. Both are designed to extend the use and value of native SharePoint while addressing the deficiencies which are encountered when using SharePoint out of the box for an intranet. However, there are considerable differences across the products including licensing and scope.
When Powell may be the better fit
There will be some organisations and scenarios where Powell may be a better fit compared to Lightspeed365, and vice versa.
If you’re a larger and global enterprise with a complex structure looking for a more comprehensive digital workplace solution that extends beyond the intranet, then Powell may be a better choice than Lightspeed365. Powell Intranet comes with ways to integrate M365 and non-M365 tools including a “Universal Connector” facility and an AI studio to build custom agents that can use the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The intranet can also be configured to drive targeted and localised experiences across different markets and brands.
Because Powell is so flexible, it can also be a good choice if you have unusual or specific needs and have set aside budget for configuration, for example in setting up integrations. Powell may also be more suitable for those looking for a solution that extends governance to Teams as well as the intranet and wishes to procure one integrated platform that delivers both.
Powell is also recognised by the key analyst houses, including Forrester and Gartner as a prominent solution in their respective flagship reports on the intranet market. If that recognition is material for your procurement team or business case, then Powell has that advantage over Lightspeed365.
Reasons to consider Lightspeed365
Lightspeed365 has several qualities that make it attractive for potential customers, some of which also differentiate it from Powell Intranet.
Perpetual licence vs subscription
Lightspeed365 stands out among intranet in-a-box solutions because it includes the option to purchase the Core product as a perpetual licence, although standard subscription options are also available.
A perpetual licence allows you to own the Core product outright. This can work out to be more cost effective over three to five years as you avoid ongoing licence fees. It is also a strong option for organisations that prefer to classify their intranet investment as capital expenditure (Capex). Note that the perpetual licence is frozen at the version you purchase. As it stands, Powell does not offer a perpetual licence option. See Lightspeed365 pricing.
Data sits on your Microsoft 365 tenant
Lightspeed365 runs on your Microsoft 365 tenant inheriting all your security settings and policies, satisfying data residency requirements, and meaning IT security and compliance teams have less to review at the procurement stage. We consistently find this is a major reason that organisations select Lightspeed365. Powell also ticks this box.
Implementation by an experienced vendor
Powell Software works through implementation partners, which may require a separate or parallel procurement process alongside the product. With Lightspeed365, any implementation support and associated professional services are carried out directly by Content Formula who own the product with different levels offered. A self-serve option is also possible.
Content Formula is a specialist intranet, digital workplace and SharePoint consultancy with decades of specialist experience in the field. Choosing Lightspeed365 means you’re only ever dealing with one provider rather than two; it also means you can ensure there is no disconnect or knowledge gaps between the product vendor and the team implementing the solution.
Time to value
Lightspeed365 implementations are both straightforward and quick, usually taking weeks rather than months, ensuring an earlier time to value as possible. This is due to the product being built on SharePoint, and the product design which offers additional features which work alongside existing web parts rather than necessarily replacing them. You don’t have to start from scratch if you have an existing native SharePoint intranet. Content Formula’s implementation methodology is also geared towards rapid deployment.
Lightspeed365 can be a good choice for organisations who have an ambitious timeline for launch but don’t want to compromise the quality of the intranet. Based on what we have observed in the market, Powell Intranet will tend to require more configuration than Lightspeed365 at the implementation stage.
Built for internal communicators
Some internal communicators tell us they dislike using out-of-the-box SharePoint for their intranet because it falls short and doesn’t meet their internal comms needs. Lightspeed365 offers additional features to support improved reach, impact and engagement with communications, all wrapped up in a more attractive and on-brand experience.
These features include better support for targeted news, alerts and push notifications, topic subscriptions, a noticeboard facility, improved formats for content such as events and a social feed. There are also more flexible branding options to ensure the look and feel is more closely aligned to your brand requirements, as well as various improvements to the layout to support the better presentation of content.
Improved search experience
Employees must be able to find the information they need to get things done. Poor search is frequently the number one complaint about an underperforming intranet; any SharePoint intranet that doesn’t deliver great findability will not be successful.
SharePoint search is already powerful, but Lightspeed365 enhances it through several features. These include a floating search that can be scoped to specific types of content, integrated AI search to support natural language querying, a panel to access favourite apps, a viewer to browse all Teams, SharePoint sites and Engage communities, and even a “handbook” search for self-service and reference content.
Easy day-to-day management without heavy IT dependency
Lightspeed365 is designed to be managed by the intranet team without the significant administration overhead that can come with more complex intranets. Because Lightspeed365 is so easy to use and manage, there is less of a learning curve associated with administrating a more complex solution.
Lightspeed365 also avoids the frustrating dependence on IT resources associated with some solutions. This means communicators and intranet professionals can make changes in areas such as page design without bottlenecks, while the IT helpdesk isn’t overwhelmed with requests from the intranet team.
